Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born a Hindu... but he married a Muslim woman and went on to have two kids. His kids did not inherit his guruship because they weren't spiritually inspired enough.
Isn't that amazing? He crossed all boundaries that constricted and oppressed society. He shunned that which he was born into, even though it was a respected caste. He crossed religious lines even though it was frowned upon. He rejected his own sons even though everything was inherited from parents.
He turned the world upside down.
But he did it with reason! He shot down traditions that were pointless. He declared us the makers of our own lives.
That is why he is the founder of Sikhism and we should follow in his footsteps. We are bound by no rules but those that make us good, better human beings.
